February 3-13: World War 1

February 3: In the beginning of class, we had to pick up two sheets. One was the poem "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen. The other paper was the World War I station activity. We had to watch short clips on the technologies made during WWI. Then we had to complete the WWI station activity sheet. On the sheet we had to describe what a gas attack was like after reading the poem "Dulce et Decorum Est." Then we had to write a poem modeled on Owen's poem. Station 2 was to write 5 journal entries describing life on the front after looking over the infographic on the trenches. In station 3, we had to label the map with the country lines and alliances, the major battles and the two fronts. Station 4 was to watch the video on the technology and then answer the questions listed. This lasted pretty much the whole class. Most people didn't finish, but if you did most of the work, Ms. Hansen gave you full credit.

February 5: We took notes and discussed how the US entered World War I. We learned that the US was to be an isolationist even though it was supplying the Allied Powers. Some things that caused the US to enter the war were when a German U-boat sank the HMS Lusitania killing 128 Americans and the Zimmerman telegram that was sent from Berlin to Mexico but intercepted by the British and sent straight to America. We also learned about propaganda and when the US declared war on Germany.

February 9: During this class we had the choice of reading and evaluating documents or taking notes on how the war ended and writing President Wilson a letter regarding his Fourteen Points. Of course, we chose writing the letter. We took notes on the Armistice and the Treaty of Versailles. The war was ended July 28 1919 (exactly 5 years after the death of Franz Ferdinand). We also learned the results of the war. Some examples are how Germany had to pay reparations to the Allied powers and did not become as weak as other countries thought. After we took notes, the class started writing their letters to President Wilson. We did not finish, and ended up doing it for homework.

February 11: Jeopardy! We all sat in different groups and picked group names (Nooo...Ms. Hansen didn't spell most of them right at first). The topics consisted of things we have covered in previous classes like imperialism, the SPAM war, WWI, progressive presidents, and kitchen sink (random stuff). It was a really fun game. Although there was some cheating (MARCUS!) and Ms. Hansen is not so good when it comes to adding our scores up, it was a very close game. In the end, the Shades (AaRae, Kenisha, Michael, and Terrence) won. We all basically jumped Ms. Hansen for some candy after class (Lol).I think this game prepared us for our test "opportunity" next class.

P.S.- This is Ms. Hansen's kind of math...Lol.

February 13- For it to be Friday the 13th, this class went pretty well. We took a test "opportunity" that was okay. Ms. Hansen said from now on she is giving out lollipops every time we take a test. Don't forget! We will hold her to that. We also had a little Lincoln related extra credit. Everyone should have atleast got one of the extra credits right because we all know Ms. Hansen is from KENTUCKY! We spent the whole period working on the test. I hope everyone did really well. Think of Ms. Hansen because she's going to Kentucky tonight at the same time that plane crashed. Happy Valentine's Day guys!

First 100 Days: "Obama Cleaning Up"

We have our First African American President...2009 had a good start. President Obama has so much to accomplish in his four years, and i have the faith that he will make everything better, yet it is going to take all four years. Many people are expecting the change he was focusing on to happen over night, and that is impossible! Obama knows what he is doing and being President isn't an easy job I am sure. With our support he can clean up the mess Bush and the corrupted Govt has created in the past. Us as U.S. citizen have the future to look forward to, we will have a major impact on the future, because WE ARE THE FUTURE! =]

People that were against Obama being President are trying to bring him down. I have heard so much "bickerringgggg!!!!" about ...."What has Obama done so far?".... come on, it hasn't even been a month since he took office. Are they stupid? ..I think so. They need to wait and make judgements after the four years is up..then it will be an appropriate time for the haters to make judgement and review what has changed. President Obama has our interest in mind, especially when it comes to "equal opportunity" ...and "education". Obama made history...and together we all are the "CHANGE", that has and is still coming !

THE BEST SUPER BOWL EVER

SUPER BOWL 43 WAS ARGUABLY THE BEST SUPER BOWL EVER. I HAVENT SEEN A SUPER BOWL THIS EXCITING SINCE WELL??? LAST YEAR. SATONIO HOLMES WAS THE THE SB MVP RACKING UP 9 CATCHES (4 IN THE GAME WINNING DRIVE) FOR 131 YARDS AND 1 TOUCH DOWN. THIS IS THE BEST GAME BEING PLAYED AND THE STEELERS HAD ARGUABLY THE BEST 2 PLAYS IN THIS ONE GAME. THE ONLY WAY THIS GAME COULD BE BETTER IF THE RAVENS WERE IN IT TEAR TEAR. BUT ALL IN ALL THIS IS THE BEST THE BEST GAME IVE EVER SEEN

Barack Obama: the First Black President!

On January 20,2009 Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. Over 1million people gathered at the National Mall to experience history. This was an exciting and emotional day, especially for African Americans. Many people at the National Mall that day never thought that they would live to see a Black man become president. In his inaugural address, President Obama spoke of serious issues that he plans to solve, such as the economy and the war in Iraq. After the inauguration, Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, attended a luncheon with members of congress. At this luncheon, he urged lawmakers to come togehter, "with a sense of purpose and civility and urgency,"so that they could work towards finding solutions to the nation's problems. Later in the day, Obama and his family, along with vice president Joe Biden, went to the inaugural parade. Before taking their seats to view the parade, Barack Obama and his wife got out of their car to wave to fans and suppoters. It is good to see that he is still down-to-earth even though he has been getting alot of publicity. I believe that Barack Obama will be a good leader of this country, and lead the United States to a brighter future.

Muckraking....Ewwwwww!!!!!

Today in class we went into a term called muckraking. Muckraking is a term used to describe when people try to "dig out dirt" on people or companies. Muckraking can sometimes be bias and most of the time it is. From getting fired form your job to not getting the satisfaction guaranteed. Not all Muckraking comes from bias sources. Many people discover their "dirt" through research. In a movie we watched called "Super size Me" the main character found out that McDonald chicken Nuggets are made from not the healthy but crippled, diseased, and old chickens with enlarged breast. They put the chicken through a processor,then form them into their shapes, and ship them while in refrigeration to McDonald's where they are basically reheated. What I just stated was an example of muckraking on McDonald's chicken nuggets.

Inquiry Leson........Final!!

Today in U.s. History class we finished our inquiry lesson. The class read the last primary document and learned of the dangers of working in a coal mine.

In the article we found out that the coal mine practiced child labor. The children dealt with sharp coal that would often cut them and they also dealt with dangerous machines that would suck them up and spit them out in half.

We finished the class off with a paragraph that asked if labor unions were necessary. I said that labor unions were necessary because they lowered work hours and higher wages, which were two of the mot famous problems in the early labor world.

Inquiry Lesson Prt.2!!

Today in class we continued our inquiry lesson, although this time we focused more on laborers conditions and they hardships they faced. We went through different songs and newspaper articles to find the bad conditions faced by laborers. An example of one of the articles we read was The Triangle shirtwaist factory Fire newspaper article. The bad conditions faced in this article were the workers had low wages, long hours, insufficient escape plans, and they worked in a poorly built building.

Inquriy Lesson.... WHAT!!!??

Today November 5, 2008 in History class we did what is called an inquiry lesson on work and living conditions during the progessive era. I learned that in this progessive era work wages were low, many people's work instituion was poorly santintized and dangerous, and worked for ten hours a day.

When bosses started to cut wages for factory workers many people quit or were fired. This movement bought chld labor to play. Boss's would only hire men who had male children that could work. For example if a man applied for job and he had a son that was at least five years old he was usually hired.

I also learend that when people loss their job the came together to form labor unions. These labor unions set goals for things that would better help the working people. For example labor unions wanted to lower work time and hire wages. These attempts were usually denied .

Today in class we finished up our different summaries on the topics assigned to us. In my group we were assigned Plessy vs. Ferguson. This court case (a Supreme Court case) happened in 1896 in Louisiana. A black man sat in the white section of a train just to "test" the law. Once arrested he plead that this violated his 14Th Amendment. The court agreed with and accepted separate but equal so they overruled it. This decision was a catalyst of some sorts that continued discrimination and segregation. Lastly, we went over some of the does and don'ts of our paper. We are to cite all of our resources, and to use only .edu websites. Don'ts would be not to speak in the first person, and to be professional (do not speak as if you are writing a blog). Some of these new stipulations may mess up some people and cause them to revise their paper, but it will make it even better.!!! Good luck!!

Gilded Age

Today we learned a little bit about the Gilded Age.
This era of time involved corruption, lies, and deceit.
Gilded gold is basically a fraud where an item is recognized as gold, but it is only gold on the surface while the real substance is something else. Mark Twain feferred to this time period as the Gilded Age because Boss William Marcy Tweed used money from city contracts for his own benefit. He was sent to jail because he was convicted for fraud and extortion. Ulysses S. Grant also used liquor funding for his own personaly gain and stole a great amount of money from over priced taxes.

Unit 1 Test....YIKES!!!

Today was BORING.....Just kidding...

In class today we took our unit 1 chapter test. In my opinion it wasn't too hard, but it wasn't easy either. Our test was about the Reconstruction period, after Reconstruction, the manufacturing industry, and the steel,oil, and railroad industries.

The most of the questions dealing with reconstruction and the aftermath of it were pretty easy. The BCR'S dealing with the struggles and challenges of blacks were also kind of simple. Then again Reconstruction has been something that we focused on for a while.

Another part of the test dealt with the expansion of the country west or "manifest destiny", as well as the settlers of the west. Those questions were also very simple, we studied a lot and even played Jeopardy to help prepare for this test.

Our test was also about the industry of the railroad boom, as well as the oil and steel company advancement in the industry. People like Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt.

For the most part our test was OKAY...and even if you didn't study the night before, the studying we did in class should have helped educate you for the test.

On thew day of October 13,2008 was our class and we prepared for our big test by playing a great game of jeopardy!!!The categories included Civil war,Kitchen sink(which is any random thing category),western movement, Reconstruction, and 2 more that i cant remember. CRAZY BUS DRIVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Dayton Beach Fl a bus driver was accused of stopping on a rail road and telling the kids that he was going to leave them their to die. A little girl who was on the bus says that, that was what the bus driver did. We all know that the driver is supposed to stop at the rail road crossing and look both ways and keep driving but who knows what the driver(who is unknown at the time ) really did. This is important because what if this person really would have done it. This girl who said that the bus driver did this is 12 I would believe her. well right now this person is being investgated and hopefully we will find out what really happened on that Monday. Lets just wait and see.

Today in class, we talked about WallStreet, and gave our opinions on whether or not we felt that it was the government's job to bail WallStreet out. We found out that even if a company fails, the CEO of that company is still paid in millions!!! This is called a golden parachute package. Ms. Hansen also showed us a poster of a bond advertisement like ones that the government used in the past to convince people to buy bonds(shares of the government), in order to fund wars. To end class, we played a game on industry in the 1800s, that was similar to Family Feud. In the end, it was a tie between team1 and team2(<---that was my team :) )

Today we learned specifically about contextualization on an excerpt of the debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. One of the main topics was the war and the new genral which is te guy in the picture to the right. General David Pertraeus in April of this year he sat before a congress telling of the status on the "front".
